Custom rustic treehouse, part of a make a wish project

Treehouses Make Kids’ Wishes Come True

Superior Construction recently finished building one of two treehouses in partnership with the Make a Wish Foundation. Make a Wish Mid-Atlantic approached the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) looking for a contractor to take on the two treehouse projects, and Superior volunteered.

The completed treehouse was built in Frederick, MD, for a 7-year-old boy, while the other will go to a 5-year-old girl in Glen Arm, MD. Both children are cancer survivors. The Frederick treehouse was designed by Michael Lee Beidler of Trout Design Studio. Kathleen Soloway of Design for Change is providing interior design services. Barrons Lumber is donating building materials, and Sherwin Williams is contributing paint. Alair Homes donated the treehouse hardware. Superior is coordinating and building both projects.

Making A Difference With Treehouses

When Daniel Steinkoler, owner of Superior Construction, heard about the project, he thought, “I’ve always wanted to build a treehouse, and this allowed us to really make a difference in these kids’ lives.” He adds, “The construction has presented some interesting challenges that we don’t usually encounter, but it’s also been very fun for all of us.”

The Frederick treehouse has a one-of-a-kind design with a roof, door, and windows slanted at playful angles. The structure is suspended between two trees and has another tree growing through the deck. The design also includes a deck with a railing made to look like branches and zig-zag cedar shingles that give the treehouse a hobbit-like feeling. It has a glass wall so the boy’s parents can observe their son play. The new owner and his friends will enjoy a climbing wall, fiberglass slide, and a zip line.

Bringing his team together for a project like this during the pandemic made a lot of sense to Steinkoler. “The pandemic’s ripples have affected the whole company, and this is an opportunity to step up. It’s been a brutal year, but at the end of the day, if you can make a difference in how these kids feel about their lives, you’ll never regret helping with a project like this.”
